Kanzashi: A touch of tradition for your everyday
Discover the rich history and beautiful craftsmanship behind my Kanzashi hair ornaments and pins. Maree Grant brings a modern touch to these ancient Japanese traditions, creating pieces that capture the essence of nature and elevate your everyday style.

The timeless beauty of Kanzashi
The moment I first saw Kanzashi in a book, I was captivated by their rich history, the cultural connections between people and jewellery, and their inherent beauty and simplicity. I delved into their origins, discovering that these traditional Japanese hairpins date back to the Jōmon period, between c. 1000–300 BCE. Originally, a single thin rod or stick was believed to possess mystical powers to ward off evil spirits, worn for protection. Over time, as hairstyles became less ornate, the kanzashi also changed and became more of an everyday accessory. Today, they are often worn by brides, professional kimono wearers, or those engaged in Japanese tea ceremonies and ikebana.

Everyday elegance, inspired by nature
My Kanzashi are designed to be an everyday ornament, bringing a little lift to your mood. Imagine a touch of excitement tucked into the back of your everyday ponytail or messy bun. The inspiration behind these pieces often comes from the natural world. For instance, during lockdown, I carved a tiny koi out of wax, inspired by a trout I observed daily swimming against the current in the river. This intricate design, with its red speckled tail, was later cast in copper and added to a beautiful silver two pronged pin. Though it was hard to part with, it found its perfect home amongst the red, wavy hair of a customer, looking truly stunning.

Crafting tradition with a personal touch
My Kanzashi are born from a meticulous process. The combs themselves are cut from sheets of silver, providing a strong and elegant base. The decorative elements are then either cut or cast separately before being carefully added to the pin or comb. My interpretations of this very special crafts often draw on traditional themes such as the wave, which brings prosperity, or flowers that can build confidence and share love. While craftspeople in Japan spend years perfecting their Kanzashi, I take a small part of this tradition to share and brighten someone's day, creating unique pieces that connect to a deeper history and natural beauty.
